Disabling Annoying MS
Messenger Pop-Ups!
This is a feature of the Windows
Network, not a bug or true security leak. However, it IS being used
and exploited by spammers. Disabling this feature of the operating
system may break programs that rely on internal networking, however,
most home users will be unaffected. Do this at your own risk. Keep in
mind that running
virus
protection on your computer WITH a Firewall is the BEST way to
protect your system.
Manually Disable the Messenger Service:
- Click on the Start button in the taskbar
- Open Control Panels
- Go to "Administrative Tools" (XP users may
need to go to "Performance and Maintenance" first, then
"Administrative Tools")
- Double-click on "Services"
- Scroll down to "Messenger"
- Double-click on "Messenger"
- Change the Startup type to "Disabled"
- Click "Stop" to stop the service

If you can find a
filtered Internet service provider in your area, we would highly
recommend it!
But even WITH an
Internet filter, personally keeping track of where
your children visit on the Internet and who they chat with is the
BEST way to ensure their safety!

AD or
SPY-ware |

Some websites use
software that secretly installs itself onto your computer and
watches your searching, edits settings and/or delivers pop-up ads
(such as "Weatherbug" from "Gator").
What can you do? Virus
scanners can't always help, since they are not really considered
to be "viruses". Here are two pieces of software that can
help:
Ad-Aware
Deletes programs that lurk on your system
Spyware Blaster
Protects your computer from installation |
